New Orleans is like no other place in the world. It is often referred to as the most European of American cities, but it is much more than that: start with Amsterdam, stir in some Caribbean, add dashes of Cartagena and Memphis, and you've just begun the recipe. If you become even passingly familiar with the city's character and history, it will seem perfectly natural that this one culture produced people as different as Louis Armstrong, Richard Simmons, and Anne Rice.

When In New Orleans you have to go to the French Quarter. It is the neighbourhood where the bars and the distinctive buildings are. It is also the oldest neighbourhood of New Orleans. This is where the city was born. The area is authentic, not a reproduction of history. Many of the buildings here date back to the 1700's. But most of the architecture is Spanish, not French. That is because the city was destroyed by a huge fire and rebuilt when it was in spanish hands.

Overview

The City that Care Forgot

New Orleans - The City that Care Forgot

Jazz streams out into the moonlight, French doors open to the night breezes, sweet olive scents the air. Nearby there is laughter, a cork popping and café brûlot aflame. Welcome to New Orleans. Here, in this little corner of Europe and the Caribbean in the American South, the history is as colorful as the local architecture; the food is the stuff of legend. Haitian and African Creoles developed an exotic, spicy cuisine and were, uh, instrumental in creating jazz and Zydeco.
